How much do I charge for professional photography?

The fee to create the photograph will depend on how complicated the shoot is and can factor in costs such as hair and make-up artists; special backdrops and sets; studio and equipment costs; and any travel and on-location expenses.

I don't have any standard charges for commissioned photography. Different types of work attract different fees, which are based on the end usage. I will always have an in-depth discussion with you to work out what you need and then provide a quotation to best serve those needs.

How does the quotation and commission process work?

It is much like any other bespoke ordering and sales process. You contact me and we talk through your needs, we agree on what you would like and then I give you a price. Initially I will give you an estimate of the cost, as sometimes there are further adjustments required, as ideas evolve and specifications change. Once you are happy with all the details, I will provide you with a quote for you to confirm the commission, then I shoot the pictures. The images are delivered to the agreed specification either on disc, via email or they can be placed on my ftp web server.

I invoice you on completion of the work. In some situations I may ask the client for part of the fee up front, dependent on the complexity, scale and setup costs of the commission. If you decide that you would like to use the images for a further purpose or length of time that is outside of the agreed licence to use, we will negotiate a new licence and fee accordingly.

If you would like me to provide an estimate for you please provide me with as much of the following information as possible. You can email or give me a call to discuss your requirements:-

• Who the commissioning entity is. ie is the commissioning entity a marketing agency, company, producer, arts organisation, etc
• How many images will be required.
• Image/s subject matter. ie number of subject people, products, costumes, sets, etc
• What is the purpose of the image/s. ie advertising, marketing, publicity, catalogue, brochure, flyer, leaflet, etc
• In what media the image/s are going to be used. ie internet, poster, catalogue, consumer/trade magazine, national press, packaging, point of sale, television/cinema, etc
• How long the image/s will be used in each media.
• Territory of use. ie UK, EC, worldwide, etc
• Logistical information. ie pre-production meetings, post production (incl. retouching), shoot location, stylists, set construction, etc

Plus of course, any other information you think relevant. Don't worry if you don't have all of the above info yet, I can provide you with an estimate to start the ball rolling and you can gauge the possible costs and options. I am very happy to help you figure out the details and evolve creative ideas with you.

What about copyright?

Like the vast majority of professional commercial photographers, I retain the copyright and I will grant you a licence to use the photographs you commission. The extent of the licence is part of the calculation when costing work. I grant licences for a single use if that is all a client needs or I can grant an unrestricted, worldwide licence if that suits the client's requirements and budget.

How far will I travel for a client?

I have worked all over the world and I love interesting and challenging commissions. My service is bespoke and so I will happily talk about travel with you.
